Yes, we are talking about mascara today!
Mascara History: Did you know mascara was invented in 1840 By Eugene Rimmel (The house of Rimmel)! Later in 1913 , American chemist T.L. Williams created the first modern-day mascara by mixing coal dust and petroleum jelly. The product was named Maybelline – a combination of his sister’s name (Mabel) and the product’s main ingredient Vaseline. Clearly the ladies of those times loved long fluttery lashes as much as we do now.
I am blessed with long eyelashes so initially I did not understand what the great fascination was with this wonder product. Only recently I have realized that a good mascara can do wonders for your look.
Today I am reviewing “They are Real” by Benefit Cosmetics.

This is Benefits award-winning, bestselling product and there was just so much chatter about it that I had to try it. The product claims to lengthens, curls, volumizes, lifts and separates lashes. Over the top claims but it does some of those things if not all!
More than the formula, it’s the wand that needs to be appreciated for its design. It picks up just enough amount of product and deposits it evenly on the lash and at the same time the closely placed thorn like protrusions separates the lashes. This helps in coating the product evenly on all lashes giving a very natural look. It is because of the wands design the lashes look jet black and long.
It definitely does not curl the lashes on its own i.e. without using an eye lash curler. It is also not very volumizing in one go. One can build up the volume by increasing the number of coats.
- Lengthens the lashes
- Defines and separates them leaving them jet black.
- Doesn’t clump or dry out the lash.
- Formula doesn’t flake.
- Doesn’t noticeably curl the lashes.
- The size of the brush makes it difficult to coat hard-to-reach areas.
- Expensive for a product that can be used only for a limited time.
Instead of buying the full size go for the travel size, as mascaras tend to dry out soon. The wand is wonderful so hold on to it and try using it with a relatively economical formula to achieve a similar effect. Have you tried this product yet? Let me know what do you think about it.
